Frequently Asked Questions
-
What is the difference between Rainbow and Rainbow Live?
Rainbow is an XML editor that runs in your browser, it allows you to import and export XML and RBW files to and from your hard drive.
Rainbow Live is placed on your own webserver and has all the functionality of Rainbow. In addition it has the ability to work as a simple CMS complete with admin/user log-ins so that you can deploy it on a registered domain allowing live updating of your XML data.
-
Will Rainbow work with my existing Flash website or component?
Yes, Rainbow can be used wherever there is XML. Compatibility with existing websites or components relies on the structure of the XML - as long as your structure is correct there should be no problem.
-
What Flash Player version does Rainbow require?
In order to load Rainbow you must have Flash Player 10 or later installed. FP10 enables the file open/save function to and from your desktop.
-
Is Rainbow compatible with Actionscript 1 / Actionscript 2 / Actionscript 3?
Yes. Rainbow does not need to communicate directly with any other Flash file so it doesn't matter what version you program in.
-
What are RBW Files?
RBW is the file extention for Rainbow Project and Template files. Rainbow can import and export XML files but the real work is done with RBW files - this is because Rainbow stores metadata about your XML (such as publish/lock/hide/max character information).
The RBW file is what allows Rainbow to create the final XML files.
-
Do you need to use RBW files?
No, you can work straight on XML files via the import/export menu item.
-
Will Rainbow work on existing XML files?
Yes! Choose the import menu item to open an existing XML file in Rainbow. It will even set a few dispaly defaults for your convenince (such as choosing the first attribute of each node as a feature snippet).
-
Why is there only one password option?
Both admin and user logins use the same password. This is to allow for the decryption of the project information. The user and admin username can be changed individually in case you want to prevent the user from logging in as an admin.
-
How many user accounts can Rainbow Live have?
2, an Admin and a User. These names can be changed.
-
How do I get a Domain Key for Rainbow Live?
You can purchase a Domain Key from here. Once you have been sent your Domain Key, upload the Rainbow.swf file to your web server and enter the Key into your preferences.
-
Do I need to know PHP/ASP/.Net to use Rainbow Live?
No. Rainbow is ready to use FTP to upload/update your XML content, images and files. All you need to do is input the correct host and user details into the Rainbow preferences. Of course if you want to use your own upload scripts then this is also possible.
-
Can I use my own server side scripts to upload/update my Rainbow Live files and content?
Yes. You can target any scripts you like. You can learn more here.
-
Can I use the same Domain Key for different websites?
No. Rainbow Live requires a Domain Key for each website you want to manage. The Domain Key is specific to the domain name supplied when you purchase a Domain Key. However a registered Domain Key will also work for sub-domains.
-
Will my Domain Key work on sub-domains?
Yes> Any registered Domain Key will also be valid for subdomains. For instance if you purchase a Domain Key for www.mysite.com, your Domain Key will also be valid for subdomain.mysite.com.
-
Is Rainbow Live a CMS?
Yes and No. Rainbow Live is an extension of Rainbow and as such it is primarily an XML editor.
The Live features allow it to be used as a "lite" CMS, so you can make content and structure changes, as well as upload files and create thumbnails.
The real purpose of Rainbow Live is to produce a solution for small to medium websites that don't need the complete bells and whistles (and overhead) of a full CMS system. It also makes designing the structure of the data very easy for web developers that might have strong Flash skills but lack backend experience.

I noticed that the text editor added extra parameters and omitted the style declaration. Is this a feature of the online version and is it adjustable in the live version.
When you switch from HTML mode to Rich Text mode, Rainbow converts the HTML to Flash friendly HTMLtext which carries a lot of inbuilt formatting rules. This is partially because not all HTML tags are supported by Flash, for a list of supported HTML tags see: http://livedocs.adobe.com/flash/9.0/main/wwhelp/wwhimpl/common/html/wwhelp.htm?context=LiveDocs_Parts&file=00000922.html

Can you enable and disable features? I'm building a website that contains say 5 topics with a 10 or more questions per topic, basically I wouldn't want the client going into the text editor as all of the questions and responses would be attributes, also they wouldn't have the need to add photos or anything else other that attributes. Can I make a basic version that they could use, also I'm assuming skinning and creating user accounts is pretty simple? Thanks in advance.
As Admin, you can enable and disable most of the features in Rainbow Live by using the "lock" and "hide" buttons where available. For instance you can lock/hide individual Nodes and attributes as well as the Text input window. This will affect what the user log in can see and do. Also, only attributes which have been set as image/file upload attributes by the admin will enable the user to use these features.
There are only two accounts in Rainbow - Admin and User, these both share the same password, but can be named uniquely.
The current skinning options only allow you to add you logo to the top right right corner of the log in page.

Hi, I will definetly be purchasing your software as it is ideal for what we are looking for. I have a question regarding development and licensing, I am working on a project that will be built in house and then ported to another server at a later date, I'm sure you can already predict my question. I realize that the license is for 1 domain, is there anyway to transfer this domain registeration once we have secured access to the other server (might be a few weeks from now)? We would like to begin development with this tool right away. Thank you for your time.
Code and Visual will happily supply a second Domain Key for development use with any purchase of Rainbow Live.
-
Hi Code and Visual, I'm very interested in your product and am wondering if you supply the FLA files so I can modify the CMS to my liking. I understand that it would be illegal to resell it...
No. Code and Visual does not provide the source code for Rainbow, however we can customize Rainbow to your liking if you wish to cover development costs.
-
Code and Visual will happily supply a second Domain Key for development use with any purchase of Rainbow Live. Is the second Domain Key for development included in the initial purchase cost?
Yes, the second Domain Key will be supplied free of cost, simply email us after purchase with the name of the second domain and we will provide you with a Key.
-
Can I use in the virtual host? like http://localhost/xxx/ , and this is a quota of domain key, or not? How to do in my develop machine, before publish to production machine?
You can use the following Domain Key for http://localhost: 9abf3752330be9c4a3a7f0f538500010 (It is not counted towards your quota)
Remember in order for saving to function you will need to set up either an FTP service or use ASP/PHP scripts write to your test machine.
-
Can I translate any English word caption on Rainbow Live Flash interface to other language (UTF-8)? Do you seperate the wording in xml file or other way?
At the moment this is not possible but it is something we are looking into it for a future release.
-
How can I use this with a site that is has multiple XML files?
The current version of Rainbow only works with one XML project per isntall. If you want to work with multiple files you currently need to create a new Rainbow install for each.
-
Can I pay more for an unlimited version?
Rainbow is licenced on a per domain basis. We see this as a small part of the service cost to your clients which provides them with a CMS system that would otherwise cost many times more to develop.
-
How do I install the update?
To install the Rainbow update simply download the new .zip package and copy over your Rainbow.swf file.
PLEASE NOTE as with any upgrade, please make a backup of your porjects before proceeding. While we try our best to make new updates backwards compatible, it is always possible that unexpected differences may occur.
-
Is it possible to deactivate the Rich Text Editor?
